Daniel Johnston, MD, MPH
Daniel Johnston is founder and chief executive officer of Brainspan, whose mission has always been to empower patients, practitioners and partners with data to create healthier individuals, improve natural health products and move medicine.
In 2009, as a soldier medic in the US Army, Johnston wanted to find solutions to build resilience in soldiers and their family members, and to reduce negative outcomes and performance when going through stressful situations. At the time, soldiers were going through multiple Middle East deployments and as a result, were suffering from PTSD, marital problems, substance abuse and other negative life events. At a NIH conference, he had been involved in a discussion about the complete lack of "nutritional armor" where there was a massive need, and essential fatty acids offered the resilience they were looking for. Thus began the first-ever combat study researching fish oils in soldiers under stress. An incredible association between EFA and brain chemistry was proven, and brain chemistry was found relatively easy to balance.
He has now retired on a mission to bring the research and methods to the public.
